Buying aftermarket parts for your appliance may save you some money upfront but may end up costing more money in additional repairs down the road. For example, I purchased an aftermarket drain pump for a Whirlpool direct drive washer. The unit was difficult to install due to some molding imperfections compared to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part. It was also noisy. Not trusting the part, I removed it and installed the OEM version. The OEM version is about three times more expensive than the aftermarket product, but I found it worth the added cost.

Websites selling appliance parts usually sell lots of aftermarket products, but you have to read carefully, otherwise you will believe you are purchasing an OEM part. Some sites bring you to their location by advertising original equipment manufacturer parts for Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire, and o, but then direct you to their lower priced aftermarket versions. This is bait and switch, but it’s common.

Some websites refer to their parts as “Exact Replacement Part.” In this phrase, the giveaway is “Exact Replacement” which indicates it is the exact replacement for the OEM part. Exact Replacement Parts are made for many brands including Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Roper, and Kitchenaid.

In conclusion, cheaper is not always better, and make sure you know what you are purchasing. If you have to have an aftermarket version, do some research to see what others have to say about it first. If you’re looking for an OEM part, make sure to read the labeling carefully, in order to confirm that it is not an aftermarket part disguised with phrases like “Exact Replacement Part.”

I’m back to tell you the importance of maintenance on your appliance. These Tips are directed to your Refrigerator, Ice Machine and Dryer, of course the Brand of the machine does not matter (Example: Whirlpool, Kenmore) etc…

Save Time and money! Create a maintenance schedule on your appliances. Do it yourself by checking your manual. Most people don’t even look at the manual of their appliance. If you don’t have your manual, you can try to look it up online or call the manufacture of your appliance.

Maintenance tips

Ice Machines:

The type of Ice Machine I’m referring to is a Stand Alone Ice Machine. Mostly manufactured by: Kitchen Aid ,Whirlpool… This Ice Machine’s have a evaporator plate that water runs over to create a block of ice. After time this plate needs to be cleaned or the block of ice will not drop into the cutting grid or will take longer than normal to drop, creating problems with your appliance.

To solve this problem you can put your ice machine in clean mode and use cleaner to clean your ice machine. Directions for this are normally on the ice machine door. If not found there you can get a basic cleaning method off the cleaning bottle. I recommend a nickel save cleaner. As always please check your manual. Ps make sure you rinse the system with clean water after cleaning. The cleaner is a acid cleaner. If you don’t think you can does this please call an appliance pro.

Dryers:

Is your dryer taking too long to dry your clothes? The first thing you should check is your outside vent. Some vents are located on your roof, so please be careful if you’re going to do this yourself. Some are located on the outside wall behind the dryer and can easily be cleared out. If you’re going to call a repair service to clear your vent you should ask if they clear vents, some appliance companies don’t clean venting.

If your vent is clear and you’re still having same problem: call a appliance service company.

Refrigerators:

Most Refrigerators have condenser coils that need to be cleaned. These coils keep the compressor cool and help the performance of the machine, saving you Money. Of course check your manual for the location of these coils and if there accessible from the front of the machine you can get a coil brush cleaner to clean the condenser coils. Use the coil cleaning brush for this job. You can usually get one at home depot or Lows at the appliance area; just ask for a refrigerator coil cleaning brush.

Should You Repair Your Appliance?

I want the public to know that the new machines out their are not lasting as long as machines that were built 10 to 20 years ago. It does not matter what brand it is: Kenmore, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag you get the idea.

In my opinion the older machines were built like tanks! They have less electronics in them and in my opinion they were built with better parts. Before you buy a new machine keep in mind that almost anything you buy today will have a electronic control board in it and the more gadgets the refrigerator, washer, dryer, dishwasher or oven has the more things that can go wrong with it. If your machine is in good condition and has been well maintained then you should think about repairing your appliance. The cost of the repair in most cases will be far less than a new machine. Also, most new machine’s will not last as long as your parents machine did!

For those of you that I could not convince and your almost out the door to purchase a new appliance I have a couple of Tips for you.

First, do a litter home work, research the appliance your going to buy. Do a search online about the appliance you want to buy to see if customers are having a problem with it, and do not just look at review pages find some blogs, get the model number of the appliance your thinking of buying and do a help search on the internet. (Example: help (your model #) washer) and see what comes up on the internet. I personally looked up a LG dishwasher that had 3000 complaints on it. Of course you can not rule out something just because it has a couple of complaints.

Second, when your at the check out ready to pay for your new machine, they are going to want you to purchase a extended warranty on the appliance. If you do not have a home warranty that covers your appliance’s and your spending a lot of money on the machine you should get the warranty. As I said, the new machines can have more than one control board and lighting and power serges can cause problems with these newer machines, and the makers of appliances are not putting serge protectors on them witch is something else you might what to buy for it also.

Third, on the positive side. I can say that I am happy with front load washers, they do save a lot of water, when a front load washer fills it only uses a few gallons of water compared to 10 gallons or more on a top load washer every time it fills. This could save you hundreds of gallons of water a year. The customers I have talked with say it washes very well. On the negative side, the cost of repair could be on the high side, so don’t forget about that extended warranty.

If you are buying a new appliance please ask the company you are buying it from who will be the service company that will repair the product if it has a problem. We are finding in some areas that some manufactures do not have any authorized Tech’s in many areas.
