There are many people who lust after some hot new appliance that they would really like to see inside their home. But sadly for some strange reason they never really get to buy it.

What are the main reasons that stop people from getting what they want into their homes?

You may not know it but it has a lot to do with the maintenance costs of the home appliances that you already have. They inevitably need to be replaced or repaired just at that time when you would have been ready to get that new hot item into your house. So your money goes into repairing or replacing the item that has broken down and you are forced to postpone your purchase. And this just keeps on happening all the time.

So why not get some service protection plan to take care of what you already have in your home? Did you know that this is a sound way of getting that hot new item you have lusted after for so long? And the news gets even better. Did you know that there are some excellent appliance protection plans in the market these days that help you purchase your next home appliance? In fact some of them will pay you up to $2,500 annually towards that next hot purchase of yours.

This is the reason why appliance protection like many insurance policies is a very sound investment to make. All the reasons for taking out any insurance policy can be applied to the protection of your household goods.

By: Brian Vandeputte

Inside of our homes typically the most expensive purchases we’ll have to make are our electrical appliances, many appliances such as High Definition Televisions and Refrigerators are quite expensive and fortunately can last us many years before needing to get a replacement. This makes it even more important that we do our research and buy the right product for our needs, this way we’ll have no regrets over purchasing our new appliance and enjoying the benefits it can bring.

Many people will be swayed by the TV advertisements and in store sales clerks who may only have a select few models that they are trying to ‘push’ for sale. Sometimes this can be the wrong product for our needs such as a washing machine that is too small for the typical load we’ll use. Getting the wrong appliance for the job can be frustrating, could end up using too much energy and effort or at the very worst: force us to return the product and start all over again searching for the right one.

When buying any major household appliance we should determine our exact requirements first to make sure we know what we’re looking for, reading about the latest technology in this field is good as many newer products can have extra time saving or energy saving features that you may be worth aiming for as this could save you some money.

Ideally you want to get a few specific models in mind, reading reviews from other customers on websites and internet forums is a great consumer tool that many people now use when making any purchase. This is a wise decision as customers who actually own the product are going to tell you information about the item that salesmen can’t such as how it performs day to day and whether there have been any faults which they have experienced. What you learn from reading these reviews may reinforce or change your decision to buy the product you’re looking at.

Another key factor in choosing an appliance can relate to the actual shop you buy it from and that is the guarantee or warranty that comes with the appliance. These are important as some appliances can actually break down or suffer faults as soon as first turning them on. This doesn’t happen often but it is reassuring that the company has policies in place that allow you to return the appliance or get a replacement free of charge. Some stores may offer extended warranties that can add many years on to the warranty that comes as standard.

By: Phillip Adams-Wright

What makes a kitchen a kitchen? That’s right, the kitchen appliances. Cost is generally the biggest factor when considering a new appliance. The typical refrigerator, freezer, stove and oven can usually put a dent in most budgets. Shopping for larger kitchen appliances also requires thought about space, size, colors and functionality.

For tight budgets, refrigerator/freezer combinations may be a compromise instead of having two stand alone units. This combination may also be a consideration if space is limited. If space is not limited, scratch and dent or second hand large kitchen appliances may be considered. Another consideration for price conscious consumers can be to limit the number of features such as automatic icemakers or having water and ice on the door.

Any feature should be judged by the price difference and then ask yourself if you can live without it because the savings can be significant. When looking for stoves and ovens, the same rationale should be applied. Can you find a combination or will second hand do? Most couples or small families can make do with combination, but if your family is always cooking or preparing meals, you may need separate units.

Dishwashers are not a luxury item and should be carefully considered before purchasing. In addition to the appliance cost, you will have the added expense of hot water. These days, large kitchen appliances are intended to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Some built in dishwashers and refrigerators can be made to look just like your cabinets. Don’t be fooled, when shopping on a tight budget, considerations and compromises must be made and you should be as well informed as possible. Weighing cost versus need seems like an easy choice, but sometimes can be challenging if you don’t know what your needs are . . .

By: Chris Smitts

Purchasing a new appliance is a major money decision. You need to be not only an informed consumer, but also ready and willing to hunt down the best prices. In this article, we’ll tell you 7 great tips that you can use to save money on your next appliance purchase.

1. Buy the right size.

Don’t buy an industrial-sized fridge for a family of three when a smaller, cheaper and more energy-efficient model will do. Instead, take a cue from the Europeans and learn that smaller is often better.

2. Go shopping at the end of the month.

If you’re purchasing your appliances from a retailer with commissioned sales clerks, you’ll find they’re typically much more likely to negotiate on the last day of the month than the first. Because sales people need to meet targets and monthly quotas, they’re more motivated to sell at a lower price.

3. Take a retailer up on their price guarantee.

If a retailer is advertising that they’ll match and beat any lower advertised prices, take them up on it. Look for the particular brand or model you’re interested in online and chances are you’ll find a lower price somewhere. Bring in a printout of the competitor’s price and take your local dealer up on his price-matching offer. You’ll save the shipping costs you would have incurred from the online retailer.

4. Don’t buy when you can refurbish.

If you can repair or upgrade an appliance that’s running relatively efficiently (and isn’t an energy bill guzzler), then do so instead of replacing it. You’ll find that repairs and extending the life of an already-efficient appliance are cheaper than a totally new unit.

5. Ask when the floor models go on sale.

Usually a few times a year, retailers will put their floor models on sale to make room for new merchandise. Get in the know and ask when these sales are happening. You can save anywhere from 30-75% just by purchasing a floor model.

6. Get the sales clerk working for you.

When your sales clerk asks if there’s anything he or she can help you with, simply tell the person you’re looking for a bargain. They usually know about returned items in the back that are heavily discounted or good deals that may otherwise go unnoticed. By tapping into the expertise of your sales clerk, you can often save a lot of money.

7. Always buy energy efficient.

It may cost more now, but you’ll save hundreds of dollars on your monthly energy bills. The unit will pay for itself in a few short years.

By: Jason B. Cox

I was overjoyed when I finally got the Kenmore Elite refrigerator that I had been dreaming about for years. Aside from the new house, this kitchen appliance is the most important purchase we made. We were really lucky because the Kenmore Elite refrigerator that was made in 2003 was recalled for slight repairs. This is because many owners opted to return this refrigerator instead of having it repaired.

I was also happy to discover that the local scratch-and-dent appliance store offered repaired units for a fraction of the cost of buying a brand new appliance. This discount is great because many of the fridges that were sold at that appliance store were never used at all. You see, the manufacturer simply sent them to the repair shop and sold them as reconditioned. Our Kenmore Elite refrigerator that we purchased was brand new and it cost significantly less than a model bought in a retail store.

I have no idea how I ever functioned without my new Kenmore Elite refrigerator now that I have it. The fridge that we chose is the three door model that has a bottom freezer compartment that is simple to access and easy to use. I can fill the storage capacity this vast kitchen appliance with the help of the side-by-side doors.

This kitchen appliance offers amazing features such as the humidity controls in the produce drawers and the impervious ice machine that is not found in other appliances. The shelves and drawers of this fridge pull out and slide right back into place without a struggle making a lot easier to clean up. This wonderful refrigerator also has a frost-free freezer that is a dream-come-true for me. I have also saved a lot of money on bottled water because my Kenmore Elite refrigerator offers filtered water.

The Kenmore Elite refrigerator allows me to save money because produce, meats and cheeses don’t spoil nearly as quickly as other units. I can store food for a longer time and still have confidence that it will still be fresh with this appliance. I do not throw away a lot of spoiled products anymore because I now know that I have time to use everything that I buy.

By: Morgan Hamilton

Neff ovens are available in series one to series six, with series six having the highest specifications and series one being the most basic. There are three types of oven in the Neff family. Single ovens are Neff’s flagship product. They can be bought on their own or together with a built- in microwave. Neff’s double ovens feature two cavities and at least three different cooking options. Neff’s range cookers feature either one large oven, dual cavity, or three separate cavities. Both models have a large hob with six burners and are flexible and easy to use.

The CircoTherm® cooking system is available in a wide range of styles and finishes. Neff introduced CircoTherm® cooking over 30 years ago and the method continues to be the benchmark for all fan models. The system works by drawing air in from the oven via a powerful fan. The air is then heated and forced back into the cavity through ducts in the back wall. The heated air is continuously circulated around the oven, which means that the temperature can be reached more efficiently and evenly than in versions that do not feature this technology.

Both the U1644 and U1564 double Neff ovens feature the CircoTherm® technology.

Neff ovens are available in a standard size, but also in smaller sizes for kitchens that do not have as much space for the new appliance. The B1724 model is only 45cm high, but they have managed to keep the same level of functionality. This particular model is a single oven and has the Circoterm® technology included. The H5430 is a microwave model and fits into a 50cm wide wall cupboard. The smaller appliances can still be customised to some extent in hat they can be combined with other small appliances including mix and match domino hobs and a slim line dishwasher.

All of the available Neff ovens have the option of a stainless steel finish, which is usually the most convenient option as it is easy to keep clean and also simple to coordinate with other stainless steel appliances. If you decide to go for a stainless steel appliance, you will probably be happy to know that all of Neff’s stainless steel models carry the ‘Steelmark,’ which proves that they are manufactured fro authentic stainless steel. Some of the appliances are also available in other colours, such as black, brown or white.

All these cooking products are graded A-G to give the energy efficiency rating of the appliance. It is the same with all appliances. Since 2003, all electric oven manufacturers have been required by law to provide energy labels for their appliances. All Neff ovens are graded A or B.

Neff ovens have won a couple of awards, including the Good Housekeeping Institute giving their stamp of approval to two of Neff’s ovens. The U1644 was awarded the Good Housekeeping Institute stamp of approval in 2005 an the B1644 model received the stamp of approval in 2006. Both of these ovens were put through rigorous testing programmes that looked at all aspects of its features, function and performance.

By: Braeg Heneffe

Fill the kitchen with some appliances not just with the groceries.

We always feel the need of having as many kitchen appliances in our homes. Every time we watch a new appliance on the TV we think of buying it. Mostly it is the women’s concern but some of the men who love cooking are equally interested in the newer appliances. In this fast and busy world where both the men and the women work, the need of appliances is increasing.

These appliances are gadgets that reduce the time spent on cooking. Almost everything from peeling to cutting vegetables is done by them. These perform jobs like grinding, mixing, cutting, baking, frying, and much more. You don’t even need to wash the dishes yourself because the dish washer does it for you. You can enjoy having fruit juices, shakes, sauces, pastes, etc at home. The newer ones ensure cooking within minutes. Ovens, food processors, microwaves are the trend of today when it comes to cooking. These have made cooking easier for singles, bachelors and students.

After a hectic busy day the only thing that one sees is the mess in the kitchen and a thousand worries on how to clean it. But thanks to these handy appliances even the bachelors can keep the kitchen little bit cleaner than before. For food lovers it is a common thing to search for newer appliances anywhere they could find. There are several TV shops that focus on promoting various kinds of kitchen accessories.

By: Jitesh Arora

A century or so ago households did not have the modern kitchen appliances most of us enjoy today. The first reports of a mechanical dishwasher date back to 1850, with the patent of a hand-powered dishwasher. We can thank Josephine Cochran, a wealthy Illinois society matron and inventor, for the early models of our modern dishwashers. Ms. Cochran hosted many dinner parties; she invented the machine so her staff could wash the dishes more quickly without chipping them.

Ms. Cochran had an engineering mind. To build her dishwashing machine, she first measured the cups and plates and then designed wire compartments to size. The compartments fit into a wheel that lay inside a copper boiler. Turning a wheel caused hot soapy water to squirt up and filter down through the dishes.

Called the Cochran Dishwasher, Ms. Cochrane’s design won favor among her friends and among local hotels and restaurants. She patented her design and produced in commercially.

It was not until the 1920s that plumbing became a feature of the dishwashing machine. Designers added electric drying elements two decades later. Initially a commercial success, dishwashers became common features of the modern household kitchen in the 1970s. Dishwashers have never achieved the status of necessity, as have range stoves and refrigerators.

Carl von Linde, a German engineer, gets credit for the technology that made modern refrigerators possible. He invented a process for converting large amounts of liquid into gas, which made it possible to keep an enclosed space cool. In 1877 he received a patent from the German government for his refrigerator. While more than 200 companies were manufacturing refrigerators by the 1920s, it took a while for this new appliance to catch on domestically. By 1937 more than two million homes in the United States had refrigerators. By 1955 refrigerators were found in 80 percent of American homes, a figure that climbed to 99.5 percent by 2005.

Before the refrigerator households had other ways to keep food cold. Basements, icehouses, and running streams helped preserve food. Iceboxes, which consisted of insulted boxes with ice, were popular until the middle of the 20th century, when refrigerators started changing from being luxuries to being necessities. Even today refrigerators are affectionately called iceboxes.

Early refrigerators used toxic gases such as ammonia, methyl chloride, and sulfur dioxide as refrigerants. Because of fatal accidents involving these gases, American corporations collaborated on developing a less toxic material, which lead to the discovery of Freon, which quickly became the standard for refrigerators. Decades later scientists discovered that Freon caused serious damage to the ozone layer of the plant, after which Freon was banned.

Twenty-first century householders take their modern kitchen appliances for granted. Very few American homes are without fridge freezers, washing machines, microwaves, and range cookers. These appliances simplify household chores and fit well into today’s busy lifestyles. The history of kitchen appliances reminds us that in times past people had other ways of accomplishing the cooking and cleaning. And it makes us wonder what future inventions will change the way we manage our households.

By: Chris Robertson

Bosch appliances are some of the highest quality machines out there. They make both small and large appliances, and whenever I have been looking for a new appliance, I have invariably found that Bosch has the best reviews out there, and my personal experience has always corroborated with that.

Take the Bosch mixer for example. This is the ultimate kitchen machine. If you like to bake, you don’t have to look any further for a mixer that will meet all of your baking needs.

Lots of mixers out there claim to be great for making bread. The problem comes however when you want to make a really big batch and the bowl just isn’t big enough. This is the problem with the KitchenAid mixer– it just can’t hold enough dough for the amounts of bread that I like to bake. So even though it had just as great reviews as the Bosch, I opted not to get it because the Bosch was better. I mean bigger. Oh wait, isn’t that the same thing (when it comes to mixers at least)?

When it comes to large appliances, Bosch also comes out on the top. When I was looking to buy a new dishwasher, guess which one was rated number one wherever I looked? You guessed it, the Bosch was the best choice.

One thing that comes with quality though, it price. Bosch makes appliances that are truly top of the line, but they bear a price tag that reflects that quality in a big way.

By: Miri Goldberg

Appliances generally last for years, especially when maintained properly. Proper maintenance actually reduces the incidents of faulty functioning considerably. When a household appliance stops working, you have two choices. You can either repair the appliance or replace it. To take the right decision several factors need to be considered. First and foremost check up on the age of the appliance and its warranty period. If the warranty period is still on, the repair may cost nothing or less than what it would have cost otherwise.

Assuming that the warranty period is over and that repair is going to be costly, then you need to analyze a few points. You should begin by getting an estimate of the cost involved. If the cost is about 50% of the cost of a new appliance then it is worth getting the repair done. Otherwise it would make more sense to just upgrade to a newer model. A very old appliance may present you with the problem of hard-to- find spare parts. Substitutes for original spare parts are not a very good idea. Chances are they would create more problems than solutions. If this proves to be a stumbling block then dump the appliance and treat yourself to a new one. Newer models are generally energy efficient. This will translate into considerable savings and over the years the cost will be justified.

Appliance repairs are usually billed on an hourly basis. Average rates for the first half an hour could vary between $50- $70. For every subsequent time block the rates would be lesser. $10 – $20 could well be the average range for the later time slabs. Lesser rates are charged if the appliance is taken to the service shop. At times the rates could be decided on a job basis. This would be beneficial for the customer as then he wouldn?t have to worry over the time being taken.

Overtime calls, i.e., calls taken after business hours, on weekends and on holidays are generally charged extra. The charges could well be up to 25% more. So unless it is an emergency, an overtime repair call is not a very good idea.

By: Seth Miller
