The “cash for clunkers” program has ended, but another government rebate program has begun, and will offer rebates for the purchase of home appliances, and result in better energy efficiency. The new stimulus program is a government appliance rebate program that comes off the heels of the “cash for clunkers” program and into the home. The U.S. Department of Energy is working with all 50 states to hand out $300 million to persuade consumers to trade in old, energy guzzling appliances for new, energy efficient models.

The government appliance rebate program will give the purchaser of a qualified home appliance rebates, possibly between $50 and $200, for replacing old, inefficient household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and furnaces with newer Energy Star-rated appliances.

Did you know that the average home spends about $2,200 on energy bills every year? Changing to home appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating, can save $75 a year in energy costs, while saving the environment. Until recent news of the government appliance rebate (dubbed “Cash for Appliances” or “Cash for Refrigerators”), many Americans had heard of Energy Star appliances, but didn’t really know much about them other than they cost more than average appliances.

How Will the Government Appliance Rebate Program Work?

Each participating state will be required to put together a unique plan to distribute the government appliance rebate program funds to consumers who purchase energy efficient home appliances. For example the state of New York has initiated their plan, and will be offering rebates under a program coined “The Great Appliance Swap Out”. Although the program initiated October of 09 it is not expected to be in full swing until early 2010.

The states participating will offer rebates to consumers who purchase home appliances in the following categories:

• Boilers
•	Central air conditioners
•	Clothes washers
•	Dishwashers
•	Freezers
•	Furnaces (gas and oil)
•	Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
•	Refrigerators
•	Room air conditioners
•	Water heaters

The Bottom Line – Save Energy, Save Money!

When buying an appliance, remember that it has two price tags: what you pay to take it home and what you pay for the energy and water it uses. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR model, and with the government appliance rebate in place the playing field for home appliance purchases has been leveled.

By: Donald Polletta

Home inspection standards seldom specify that household appliances must be inspected by the professional home inspector. There are a number of reasons for this. For example, many times the appliances go with the seller so they will not be in the house after closing. Other times, there are no appliances in the home because it is brand new or, in an older home, they were worn out and were disposed of. A problem with trying to evaluate used appliances is the difficulty in doing so accurately. Even an appliance repair professional will be reluctant to try to predict the longevity or remaining life of a used household appliance.

The inspector does not want to make wild predictions about the unknown so, when appliance inspections are done at all, there are a few guidelines. These procedures may vary from one inspector to another, and from one appliance to another, but here are some basics. With a refrigerator or freezer, an inspector tries to determine if it is cooling and whether or not it is broken or rusted inside. Another common problem, that should be checked, is the condition of the door gaskets that are often found to be torn.

Ranges, gas and electric, should be checked for the basics: Do the burners, the oven and the broiler all heat? With a gas range there might be more safety checks but complicated functions, like the working of the oven timer or the calibration of the thermostat are beyond the scope of the inspection.

When the dishwasher is run, the inspector makes sure that it operates and that no water leaks show up around it on the floor or under the sink. A dishwasher, depending on the jurisdiction or circumstances, might require an air-gap. This device is a safeguard that keeps contaminated water from entering into the potable water system. In a related matter, the food disposal is usually run and the primary concern there is that it does not leak, that it is not heavily rusted and that it does not sound like it is flying apart.

As described above, kitchen appliances are commonly viewed by the inspector but laundry appliances, when they are present at all, may or may not be operated depending on a number of factors that the inspector takes into account at the time.

By: Eric Badgely

Appliances can consume as much as 14% of the total energy used in the home. You can choose an energy-efficient refrigerator, or microwave oven, that will save yourself money on the second price tag.

Picking the best quality household appliances is easy, do you know that refrigerators with the freezer on top are more efficient than those with freezers on the side!

Microwave ovens have some terrific benefits and offer great cooking flexibility.
Household appliances dramatically changed the 20th century lifestyle by eliminating much of the labor of everyday tasks. In the kitchen of nearly every home in America there is a refrigerator.

Whether you’re running around the house to get things done or preparing a meal for your family, it is safer and cheaper to operate the microware oven than conventional ovens and turn off at a predetermined time, which is great for the forgetful cook.

You expect your appliances to help you make the most of your day. We understand your way of life and have selected the best refrigerators and microwave ovens to assist you every step of the way.

Appliances today are smarter and more energy efficient than ever before-thanks to California’s appliance efficiency standards that went into effect in 1977.

The refrigerator is one of those miracles of modern living that totally changes life’s, some models feature water and ice dispensers on the outside of the door that are easily accessible.

When you buy appliances, you commit to paying not only the first cost, but also the operating cost for as long as you own it.

And over the life of an appliance, the energy cost to run it could be many times greater than the first cost. So it pays to buy energy-efficient appliances.

By: Roger King

The Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was formed in 1911 and now Hotpoint is a household name for kitchen appliances such as dishwashers, fridge freezers and washing machines.

In 1920 Hotpoint and GElectric of the United States established the Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited to market branded goods in the UK. In 1929, Hotpoint became a part of GEC group. Hotpoint was a brand of GEC and in 1989 merged into a new division named General Domestic Appliances. GE then purchased a 50% share, and in 1998 was to become GDA Applied Energy.

Hotpoint is now part owned by Merloni, founded by Aristide Merloni as Industrie Merloni in 1930. The company didn’t originally produce appliances but soon created a range of appliances branded Ariston.

In 1985, Merloni bought Indesit, they were competitors in Italy at the time, but Merloni did not have the european presence that Indesit had gained. Back in 2005 Merloni was renamed Indesit Company, as Indesit was the most recognizable brand under their control.

Indesit Company had a 14% slice of the white goods market in 2007. This comprises of appliances like washers, dryers, refrigeration, dishwashers and built in products too. Ovens, hobs and cooker hoods are a large part of this market now, especially with the European trend of built-in kitchens becoming ever more popular.

Sales tipped €3.4 billion last year, and the group produced over 16 million kitchen appliances in over 30 markets around the world. The group is second only to Electrolux for production of appliances in Europe. They currently employ over seventeen thousand people.

The one thing that seems to keep Hotpoint at the top of the sales table is the ability they have to look after customers post-purchase. Many a brand has fallen down due to inadequate response times, poor timescales for service and repair, and high product failure rates. Playing to the economies of scale they benefit from, Hotpoint have over the years installed a dependable back-up network. More homes have a Hotpoint appliance than any other brand, and they back this up with the biggest after-sales service operation in Europe. With appliances having a life span of around 4 years on average, this is an important factor when today’s consumers are making a considered purchase.

Hotpoint’s current philosophy is about intelligent ideas, and the brand pushes the suggestion they combine ‘advanced technologies with common sense’.

Another area that Hotpoint are concentrating on, is the environment. Every year they are building a reputation as a brand who are towards the front of innovation with regards to energy performance. Features such as A plus in energy efficiency and Eco Cycles and settings help the consumer decide to take a Hotpoint model into their home. The Eco LED indicator on the Aqualtis washing machines will let you know if you have made energy savings of up to10% through modifying the temperature or spin speed of your selected wash cycle.

Some of the modern features of Hotpoint appliances include ideas like faster programmes than other manufacturers and silent operation. The new ‘Baby Cycle’ has been specially designed for stains associated with babies.

By: Braeg Heneffe

Dehumidifiers are household appliances that reduce the level of humidity in the air. This can be helpful for those concerned about mold and mildew growing inside their homes. Mold can be allergenic which can mean irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Besides the prevention of the growth of mold which has unpleasant health risks for human beings, humidity can cause unsightly condensation and can make it hard to dry laundry.

The NewAir ADS-600 Electric Mini Dehumidifier is an excellent dehumidifier that can help you prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Increased water vapor in the air can warp furniture and increase wood rot. This dehumidifier uses three thermo-electric peltiers to cool the air and condensate the water instead of using a compressor. This makes the dehumidifier highly efficient and silent.

How the thermo-electric peltier works is the ambient water in the air condenses onto the heat sink that is attached on the cold side of the peltier chip. The water then drips off into the reservoir to be emptied at a later time. The NewAir ADS-600 Electric Mini Dehumidifier removes up to 32 oz. of water a day in ideal conditions.

The NewAir ADS-600 also has a built in ionizer to reduce particulates. The ionizer electrically charges the molecules of the air. It generates negative ions which particulate matter sticks to. It also has an activated carbon filter which absorbs noxious odors and gases. This helps if you are sensitive to odors and smoke. This dehumidifier is ideal for small areas like closets and small rooms.

The water tank on the NewAir ADS-600 is translucent and detachable. It can hold up to 4.8 pints of water. The automatic shut off switch prevents the tank from overflowing. When the tank is full, you are alerted by a red indicator light.

Other ways to prevent mold are:

-Use an air conditioner with a HEPA filter. The filter can trap mold spores from the outside air before they circulate inside your home.

-Change the furnace and air conditioning filters regularly.

-Properly ventilate all of your bathrooms and run the ventilation fan for half an hour following a shower or bath to remove humidity.

-Remove leaves and vegetation from around the foundation of your house to promote ground water drainage that flows away from your home. Also, clean the rain gutters frequently.

-Keep straw, wicker, and hemp organic plant containers clean and dry.

By: Erin Lynn

You may have a General Electric appliance in your house today. They have been one of the most looked for and used household appliances in the country. GE has always had many models and styles and they have been available at a good price. Gas and Electric Ranges, Refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers and kitchen vent hoods. They have served the needs of people for many years. Even today with all of the newer brands coming on the market they are still a staple in the appliance industry.

The appliances from the past were great and they looked good but maybe you now have needs that make you look for something a little bit better. Maybe a lot better. If the white enamel stove and refrigerator just isn’t doing the trick in the 1500 square foot kitchen your building or remodeling, then you have a special need that you can’t fulfill with the “standard” product. If you want one of the best looking kitchens around and you have the space to build it, look at the GE Monogram Collection Kitchen Appliances.

The Monogram series gives you a selection that is breath taking. They are more than just a pretty face on an old appliance. The whole line is engineered to do the work that the other makes and models do only do it quicker, better and more efficiently in there daily use. When you present these appliances to your friends and family there will be enough impression to go around for everybody.

There are 13 Refrigerators, from free standing to built-ins to ice makers and beverage coolers There are 11 different cooking products, from ranges to micro-waves to a Warming drawer There are 4 different ventilation systems, telescoping island hood to custom hood inserts There are Dishwashers and compactors and a complete Outdoor cooking products.

Then there are the custom adaptations of each one of these that give you the chance to make your appliance like none other in the world.

The list goes on and on with all the models and what you can do to and with them. I’ve always been impressed with the wood doors that are available for the refrigerator units. They blend into the wall so that at first glance you have to look for the handle to make sure there is a unit there.

With units that are free standing as well as built-in in just about every type of appliance, you can use them in small as well as large commercial kitchens. With the design accepting different covers and handles, the look can be tailored to what ever your interior design might be.

If your looking for a special look you owe it to yourself to look for a dealer that can show you at least some of the models from the GE Monogram line. If this is what you need to customize your kitchen the way you’ve always wanted it, you need to check it out.

By: Warren Bensinger

My appliances have been replaced twice in the past nine years. Why is this? They get used more than the recommended amount for the appliance I purchased. Having eight people under one roof gives your appliances quite a work out and often way more than it was built for.

After years of seeing how the family pizza business worked on replacing their appliances got me thinking. Why buy household appliances for my home that are not going to hold up to the beating they take? To me it makes sense to purchase industrial appliances that will survive the abuse. The size of industrial freezers compared to my household one is the difference in being able to buy in bulk for a large family or buying full price and going a few times a week.

After looking for deep freezers for sale I found both the True Freezers and Traulsen Freezers to be equally compelling. Both are large and have plenty of room for storage. Buying industrial freezers also means you have heavy duty equipment your dealing with. Better and stronger parts usually a better warranty. In today’s day and age your household fridge freezer will last quite a few years without being opened constantly and left standing open while your children view the selection available. Trying to fix it is usually very costly, between parts and labor it seems a cheaper way is buying a new one.

Industrial deep freezers are usually found at commercial restaurant stores so they may not be in your neighbor hood. Look in your local yellow pages for restaurant equipment. We have both True Freezers and Traulsen Freezers at our business and they both do well with little maintenance. When the deep freezers do have a problem you can normally have it fixed fairly cheap depending on the problem and with industrial freezers products they are more than likely to have the parts available for the life of your appliance.

Another thing to think about is your electric source in your home. Most all industrial appliance call for a 220 electric source to run on and will cost more on average to operate than your household appliance. My preference is toward the stainless steel models, they wipe clean easily and look beautiful.

Commercial washer’s and dryer’s are worth there weight in gold as well. I have personally burned three washers up in seven years because of the amount of laundry I do. Its not the appliance’s fault they were not intended to be used that much. After purchasing a commercial set of appliances my life was easier at best. I was able to keep up with the amount of laundry and saved money in the long run with the soap used, time spent, and electric used.

Take your time and look around when finding a appliances. When you decide on the one you want go shopping and fill it up. The time I save on trips to the store alone make it worth it for me.

By: Shawn Parker

Over the past century, there has been no lack of new innovations to make our lives supposedly easier and more efficient. By extension, of course, our lives are supposed to be better off for the advent of these varied household appliances and their technical wizardry. Though this is typically the case (for those who actually make use of the devices instead of letting them gather dust), it is with regrettable frequency that both small and large home appliances cause members of a household to suffer serious or even fatal injuries.

While many of these devices come with instruction manuals that outline some of the specific dangers that a particular product may hold, these written materials often fail to fully express the range of potential hazards. They certainly lack any direct engagement with the real world circumstances in which the appliances are likely to be used and deployed, instead covering only those elements that are required by law or regulation. Depending upon the full facts of the situation, it may be appropriate to consider filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer of a home appliance that causes you or your loved one to suffer injury when it is used as intended.

Sources of Household Injury

Perhaps the most alarming thing about the threat posed by household appliances is that it comes from both the objects that seem relatively harmless and also from those that are obviously coupled with some degree of inherent danger. It is incumbent upon the owner or operator of a device to be aware of the hazards that are to be expected and to use it as prescribed by the directions and common sense. There is little planning that can be done, however, to avert disaster when design defects, manufacturing defects, or malfunctions present themselves in the form of an accident.

Some of the household appliances that may prove dangerous and some of the potential adverse effects that a person might experience include:

Toasters and Convection Ovens – May cause electrical shock or start fires Garbage Disposals, Food Processors, and Trash Compactors – Can start due to electrical surge and lead to amputations or severe lacerations Gas Stoves and Water Heaters – Improperly built gas lines can cause gas to leak, creating an explosive danger and the possibility of poisoning; poorly functioning water heaters can lead to scalding burns Space Heaters – If unstable they may tip over and cause fires, also pose electrical risk

Product Liability Professionals

If you have suffered injuries that have required you to seek medical attention, then it may be in your best interest to contact a skilled and experienced attorney. The Phoenix product liability lawyers of Haralson, Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.L.L.C. are happy to assist you with all your legal needs as you seek to recover.

By: Joseph Devine

Home appliances is a term which is used very popularly today but what does it stand for? Home appliances stand for the mechanical and electrical products which are used at home for the functioning of a normal household. The home appliances are stuffs which are used to for cooking, cleaning, washing, laundry and various other functions which are carried out in every home.

But all appliances used for the running of the household cannot be brought under one umbrella head of ‘ home appliances’ for even this category can be divided in to two broad groups- the small appliances and major appliances.

Know about Small appliances

Small appliances generally refer to stuffs which are almost portable; they can be stored at place, taken out for use and again kept back. They are mostly used to keep on places like table- tops or some other platforms. Since they are portable they can be in places which are designated for them. The small appliances can be used for various purposes like cleaning, washing, cooking, laundry etc.

For example for cooking small appliances like toaster, blender, mixture, oven etc can be used. Steam irons, clothes shavers can be used for laundry purposes. For cleaning there are appliances like steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners. There are even home comfort small appliances available I the market like humidifiers, dehumidifiers, heaters etc.

Know about Major appliances

The major appliances unlike their smaller counterparts are big and cannot be moved easily from place to another. They need to be plugged in to an electric supply source in the house to make them work. The examples of major appliances are the stove, micro oven, washing machine, refrigerator, dish washer, dryer etc.

These are the most important varieties of major appliances which are used in almost everyone’s home. But there are even some appliances which though are considered to be major appliances are not so. Because of their portability the appliances like portable dishwasher, portable washing machine and portable air conditioners can be considered to be small appliances.

More about Home appliances

If you want to buy an appliance for your home, whether it is a major or a small variety you can take the aid of Internet. Hopping from one shop to another to shop for home appliances is not a feasible option so the e-world provides with the easy option of shopping online. There are many websites and forums which are mainly meant for selling appliances to the consumers.

You cannot only get to know about the details of the products and its price, you can even read reviews on them before buying. Reviews both positive and negative can immensely help you and will make you choose the right appliance for your home.

By: Adam Labno
