The “cash for clunkers” program has ended, but another government rebate program has begun, and will offer rebates for the purchase of home appliances, and result in better energy efficiency. The new stimulus program is a government appliance rebate program that comes off the heels of the “cash for clunkers” program and into the home. The U.S. Department of Energy is working with all 50 states to hand out $300 million to persuade consumers to trade in old, energy guzzling appliances for new, energy efficient models.

The government appliance rebate program will give the purchaser of a qualified home appliance rebates, possibly between $50 and $200, for replacing old, inefficient household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and furnaces with newer Energy Star-rated appliances.

Did you know that the average home spends about $2,200 on energy bills every year? Changing to home appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating, can save $75 a year in energy costs, while saving the environment. Until recent news of the government appliance rebate (dubbed “Cash for Appliances” or “Cash for Refrigerators”), many Americans had heard of Energy Star appliances, but didn’t really know much about them other than they cost more than average appliances.

How Will the Government Appliance Rebate Program Work?

Each participating state will be required to put together a unique plan to distribute the government appliance rebate program funds to consumers who purchase energy efficient home appliances. For example the state of New York has initiated their plan, and will be offering rebates under a program coined “The Great Appliance Swap Out”. Although the program initiated October of 09 it is not expected to be in full swing until early 2010.

The states participating will offer rebates to consumers who purchase home appliances in the following categories:

• Boilers
•	Central air conditioners
•	Clothes washers
•	Dishwashers
•	Freezers
•	Furnaces (gas and oil)
•	Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
•	Refrigerators
•	Room air conditioners
•	Water heaters

The Bottom Line – Save Energy, Save Money!

When buying an appliance, remember that it has two price tags: what you pay to take it home and what you pay for the energy and water it uses. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR model, and with the government appliance rebate in place the playing field for home appliance purchases has been leveled.

By: Donald Polletta

Household appliances are a must for every home and kitchen. These are those essential items which are an integral part of our daily lives, and without them it would be difficult to manage a house.

There are many household appliances that should be a part of every home. It is not difficult to find cheap home appliances that are also of good quality as there are a variety of brands available in the market. One of the most important household appliances is a washing machine. If you are on a budget, it is better to go for a smaller size that uses less water and energy. Some brands that deliver good quality in an affordable range are Whirlpool, LG and Hotpoint.

Another essential is a vacuum cleaner. Again, the price will depend on the size of the machine and the brand you choose. One of the most famous brands in the United Kingdom for vacuum cleaners is Dyson. It is amongst the cheapest but delivers good quality cleaning. An iron is something that we cannot live without. There are many types of irons available such as the steam iron and other others without steam. The Bosch TDA2301 Steam Iron is new in the market and delivers great value for less money.

The kitchen is the place where most household appliances are needed, and they can be categorized into large and small appliances. Amongst the large appliances, fridge is an essential that must be present in every home. Freezer is another item that is necessary. LG and Whirlpool are the brands to be considered on a budget, as well as Hotpoint. Apart from these items, dishwashers are now becoming an essential in the kitchen. The Bosch Integra is a great item that will not break the bank. For baking and cooking purposes, ovens are also appliances that must be purchased. Maytag ovens are a good option as they are stylish and durable, and are not too expensive either.

Small kitchen appliances also include many items. Microwave ovens are another purchase that is a must, and LG is perhaps the best brand for microwaves. They are cheaper than most other brands, but there is no compromise on quality. If you are looking for sophisticated stainless steel styles on a budget, then Sharp is the brand for you. Another important household appliance is a toaster. Although they are not expensive to begin with, you should go for Philips and Kenwood toasters as they have the lowest prices. A food processor is another appliance without which a kitchen is incomplete. It combines many functions in one product and allows you to save money. The Kenwood FP 250 is a great buy as it delivers good quality for a low price.

Lastly, a coffee machine is an appliance that has become an essential nowadays. The Bosch Filter Coffee Maker is a good option as it makes great coffee and is a cheap buy. Similarly, you can also purchase an espresso or tea maker, depending on your taste.

By: Edward Woodwards

Homes and businesses can have very different requirements when it comes to choosing appliances. Clearly, if your organization is home-based, your needs are equivalent to that of a residential dwelling. Likewise, if you are running a large manufacturing company your requirements are going to be different. Even so, home and business appliances are basically the same.

As the needs of all homes are pretty much the same, they all have the same basic domestic machines. Businesses, on the other hand can be very different, and have very different requirements. There are five basic, regular residential appliances. These are the washer and dryer, stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Other, smaller home appliances can include a microwave, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, blender, mixer, food processor, extra ranges and more.

Businesses rarely have as many appliances as homes do, although, some companies can require the same machines only in more heavy-duty models. For example, in your house, the coffee maker is usually only turned on and run once in the morning. In a fair sized organization, the coffee maker could be used five or ten times a day, or more for a larger business! When shopping for your residence, you would probably buy a regular 12 cup coffee maker, but when shopping for a large company you would probably want to find something more durable and large in proportion to the amount of people that will be using it.

A lot of businesses, including smaller ones have a kitchen in which there is usually a microwave, small fridge and a kettle. These are the same appliances that you would typically find in a house. The larger organizations may have a more full-sized kitchen with a stove and regular fridge. Businesses like manufacturing companies and factories are the ones that have the heavy duty machines. Some of these appliances include very large freezers and refrigerators. Some factories like to provide frozen treats for their employees in the summer because of the lack of air conditioning, and as such, they need a much more heavy-duty freezer than a residential address would typically have. The fridges in these factories would also be much larger in order to house all of the lunches. Some homes with bigger families can have a large fridge, but not usually as large as the factory fridges.

Another difference between home and business appliances is that manufacturers will sometimes make the business appliances have a higher wattage than the appliances meant for homes. The reason for this is because business appliances are used a lot more often and in a larger capacity than appliances in the setting of a house.

So, there is not much difference between home and business appliances. There only needs to be a difference if the organization is large and has a lot of employees. Also, both of these types of machines are bought at the same stores. It is very hard to find a store that only sells business appliances.

By: Amy Nutt

There are many people who lust after some hot new appliance that they would really like to see inside their home. But sadly for some strange reason they never really get to buy it.

What are the main reasons that stop people from getting what they want into their homes?

You may not know it but it has a lot to do with the maintenance costs of the home appliances that you already have. They inevitably need to be replaced or repaired just at that time when you would have been ready to get that new hot item into your house. So your money goes into repairing or replacing the item that has broken down and you are forced to postpone your purchase. And this just keeps on happening all the time.

So why not get some service protection plan to take care of what you already have in your home? Did you know that this is a sound way of getting that hot new item you have lusted after for so long? And the news gets even better. Did you know that there are some excellent appliance protection plans in the market these days that help you purchase your next home appliance? In fact some of them will pay you up to $2,500 annually towards that next hot purchase of yours.

This is the reason why appliance protection like many insurance policies is a very sound investment to make. All the reasons for taking out any insurance policy can be applied to the protection of your household goods.

By: Brian Vandeputte

Who is cooking in tomorrow’s kitchens, and what are their secret ingredients? Organic, local foods raised and packaged with thought to social and environmental responsibility will get the nod from future chefs.

Sharing the Apron

Poke around in a stranger’s kitchen or a few minutes and you can form some fairly accurate assumptions about them. For instance, the presence of high tech, chef-quality gadgets that together make up a kitchen of superior functionality reveals some very interesting clues about the people most frequently in that kitchen. As interesting as what’s cooking in the kitchens of tomorrow will be who is doing the cooking. Although many studies still conclude the woman of the home is responsible for the bulk of the grocery shopping and food preparation, it turns out usually men who adopt cooking as a hobby are most likely to pay a premium for high-end professional-style cooking gadgets. Although the motivation behind this behaviour is still being studied, some experts believe that because men are accustomed to investing in expensive tools for their workshops, they are less apt to have ‘sticker shock’ when they buy cookware and cooking gadgets.

So, if there is a lot of professional equipment in a home kitchen, it’s likely there is a man making pesto or challah bread on the weekends. Checking out the gadgets in the kitchen can provide insight into the age of its users, too. Besides transforming the home cooking experience into a more authentic, restaurant-inspired experience, a burgeoning trend in kitchen gadget design is to make tools easier for people to use. Hand tools with ergonomic grips and re-thought appliances such as ovens with large windows to improve visibility allow people with restricted mobility and reduced strength to continue to enjoy cooking well into their twilight years.

Global and Local Ingredient Influences

While tools have been adapted to keep up with our needs and cravings for quality, eating trends have been evolving and developing in interesting ways, too. Among the many, many trends that are flowing and ebbing in the Canadian consumer landscape, one of the most interesting (and encouraging) is the maturation of the organic movement in Canada. No longer just for the ‘granola’ set, a peek inside Canadian pantries reveals more people are choosing organic foods as staples. Many grocers now integrate organic produce and food products into their mainstream offering. Related to this success story is the growing consumer consciousness that the foods we eat need to be chosen with social and ecological responsibility. From the foie gras ban in Chicago to increased awareness about the folly of eating folklore inspired but environmentally irresponsible delicacies such as shark fin soup, chefs, retailers and consumers are becoming increasingly careful of how their food choices affect the well being of other creatures.

Similarly, more emphasis on forgotten breeds of vegetables and meats such as Berkshire pork reveals consumers are considering the source of their foods and are willing to pay a pre- mium for ‘the real thing’ versus getting a bargain for foods raised irresponsibly or shipped long distances from the source. There is a push to develop local economies and connect farmers and urban consumers in an effort to reduce ‘food miles’ or the distance your food travels. Related to these issues of ethics and food is the growing number of fair trade foods in consumers’ pantries. Luxury imported foods such as coffee, tea and chocolate are all items being successfully marketed at higher prices by retailers who guarantee the people in the developing world who produced these items were compensated fairly.

All Wrapped Up & Now here To Go

Beyond our developing concern about food ethics, Canadians show a ballooning concern about the detrimental effects plastic and other man-made packaging materials have on the environment. The small town of Leaf Rapids, Manitoba has taken the bold step to ban the use of plastic shopping bags to reduce landfill volumes. Further afield but expected to be introduced here, England’s Sainsbury grocery chain now offers 500 products wrapped in a new style cling film wrap that degrades quickly in the composter. On the horizon is packaging made of edible films (similar to what is now used to make breath fresheners and kid’s medicine). Once perfected, this innovative wrapping system will cut down on waste because people will eat the food wrap, too.

Ingredients for Good Health

Canadians are embracing food as not just enjoyable or necessary for energy, but as a prescription for good health. In fact, many consumers now choose some foods in an effort to avoid the use of patented medicines. For food marketers, this trend is a huge boon. Ads and public relations campaigns now often focus on diminishing the guilt of indulgences by highlighting the beauty-enhancing and anti-aging properties contained in some of our favorite foods. For example, chocolate makers are leveraging our vanity to sell sweet indulgences. Make-up lines are incorporating food ingredients, including chocolate, that are said to benefit the skin. Meanwhile, new lines of chocolate bars promise to improve muscle tone and boost energy. Health food indeed! What all of the trends indicate is that even as our society transforms the kitchen from a secluded work room into a gathering place where all kinds of activities in addition to cooking occur, our food and home appliance choices remain very personal and reflect our attitudes about ourselves and the world around us.

By: Amy Nutt

The kitchen is where life happens. The kitchen is not just where food is being prepared and eaten, it is the heart of the home where conversations take place, where memories are made and shared, where the party inevitably ends up, and where people and families connect.

As we can see through the eyes of our experts, the kitchen has come a long way…and it is going to go even further. By looking back at where the kitchen has come from and where it is headed, this report demonstrates how the kitchen has grown with the times to become one of the most evolutionary rooms in the home. It serves as an entertainment centre, a dining room, and a workspace. And this list will only expand as the kitchen continues its constant evolution.

As technology continues to advance, we see how it enhances the cooking experience, providing leading-edge, hard-working tools all creative home chefs will continue to value so they can express their own personal flare in their gourmet creations. Touch-activated controls, conversion systems and induction technology will bring premium performance and high-technology items straight into the hands of home enthusiasts. Steam assist technology in convection ranges will enable home enthusiasts to enjoy the same beautiful results as that of a professional chef. Cleaning up will be a breeze with the addition of steam assist technology to dishwashers – making dishes not just clean, but also sanitized.

The environment promises to maintain its position as a top priority for Canadians, and the kitchen will continue to reflect this prevalent issue through its evolution. Energy-saving home appliances and advanced technologies will help environmentally-aware consumers decrease their impact on the environment. And as awareness and demand build from the savvy home enthusiast, more changes are no doubt to come. Not only will kitchen appliances reflect this green trend by offering increased energy efficiency, but kitchen design materials will also reflect the desire for environmental sustainability. Additionally, the kitchen will be a place where home enthusiasts will exercise their desire to get back to nature, sampling organic foods, local, market-fresh produce and new ingredients.

Our experts have demonstrated that the social hub and heart of the home will continue to change with the times, leaving us with an interesting thought to ponder: how will those changes affect us, and what will our own evolution look like?

By: Amy Nutt

Living in the Unites States we have gotten used to the daily use of home and kitchen appliances. In fact I could go as far as saying that they have become indispensable. This is because they save us a lot of time and effort. This applies to devices like laundry machines, air conditioning, baking instruments, blenders and juicers. This article will focus on the importance of appliances in our lives.

Home Appliances

Given the size of the appliance market it should come as no surprise that the kitchen segment is one of the largest. This is partly due to the wide variety of appliances available. This includes dishwashers, refrigerators and stoves. In fact this can help you in the other parts of the house. This can include devices like vacuum cleaners and laundry machines. Which brings us to the actually purchase of these appliances…

Buying Method

If you approach the purchase of these devices from a traditional sense in terms of visiting multiple stores to find the best prices and etc you will potentially lose out on getting the best price. We the wide range of information available on-line it just makes sense to utilize it to get down to the specific features and capabilities of the appliance you want. An in store visit should only come after you have a solid list of criteria and you want to actually see the appliance in person. This can be useful if you have found several different competing brands and etc. The idea is to see them in person and figure out which one works the best for your needs. Once you have done this then it is time to…

Decide on the means and ways you want to purchase this item. We would still suggest that you use the Internet to do this. In most cases even with shipping included you will find a better price on-line. In fact sometimes you can use this as leverage in negotiating with a local vendor.

This article has briefly touched on the importance of appliances in the home. This included appliances in the kitchen and other parts of the house. The article also covered some of the best ways to purchase appliances. By following some of these tips you will find your purchases more satisfying.

By: John Redman

For many people, price is the most important consideration when buying appliances. What they forget, however, is that there are two prices for anything which consumes power, the buying price and the running price. Buying appliances with energy efficiency in mind may cost more up front but save you money in the long run.

Most modern appliances like refrigerators and washing machines carry a label indicating their energy efficiency. Products which use the least amount of power are qualified to use the “Energy Star” label. This is a government backed program aimed at providing consumers and businesses information about saving energy.

In order to be labeled energy efficient, a product must meet certain criteria. For example, refrigerators must use 15% less electricity than the minimum standard set by the federal government. Office equipment must automatically switch to a low-power sleep mode after a certain period of inactivity.

Almost every major appliance such as air conditioners, freezers, furnaces, and pool heaters qualify for the Energy Star label. Buying an Energy Star product will save you money on your utility bills and will be better for the environment. Using less electricity in the home means less fossil fuel consumed by power producing plants, and less greenhouse gas emissions.

Will an energy efficient product save you money? Absolutely! Each product has a label which says how much energy it consumes. You can use this information to figure out exactly how much power you will save over the life span of the appliance. Factor in rising energy costs and your savings are even more.

The energy efficiency of any product is dependent on the engineering of the various parts that use power. For example, an air conditioner has a circulation pump, a fan, and a motor to turn the blades, as well as electronic components for controlling the temperature. Each one of these can be designed to save energy, so the overall energy efficiency is affected by the quality of these components.

Some local governments offer incentives for people to buy energy efficient products. Be sure to get informed – you may qualify for rebates or low interest loans to purchase these items.

By: Hans Dekker

Personal loans beat credit cards not only on the interest rate and thus the cost of the money borrowed, but also on the consequences that such high amount purchases have and may go unnoticed. How your credit and financial situation is affected by such purchases should not be overlooked as it may turn out too onerous.

Interest Rate On Personal Loans And Credit Cards

The interest rate charged on credit cards can easily double the rate charged for personal loans. It’s amazing how abusive the rates charged by credit cards and store cards can be and almost nobody notices it. Truth is that a credit card or store card can charge an interest rate as high as 20% or even more turning financing the purchase of home appliances into an extremely expensive burden.

As opposed to credit cards, personal loans provide inexpensive sources of funds. Even unsecured personal loans can provide interest rates as low as half the rate charged by credit cards. And secured personal loans (mainly those based on home equity) can provide rates even lower than those of unsecured loans, thus becoming the cheapest sources of funds along with home loans.

Moreover, even those borrowers with bad credit, no credit or a past bankruptcy can obtain finance through bad credit personal loans and the interest rates will still be lower than the rates charged for credit card financing. Thus, if you are planning to purchase goods of certain high value, you should always consider the possibility of requesting a personal loan in order to do so.

Credit Card Debt Accumulation and Debt Risks

Another problem that credit cards have compared to personal loans is that it is too easy to accumulate debt with credit cards. Since there is only a minimum payment on credit card balances, it is very common to feel tempted not to pay the balance in full and only pay the minimum which usually consists on interests only.

This leads to debt being accumulated through a vicious circle and can eventually result in default or even bankruptcy on the long run which will have serious implications on your credit score and history and can prevent you from obtaining finance in the future. Thus, it is advisable never to pay only the minimum payments on your credit cards.

Personal loans on the other hand, provide fixed monthly payments that can easily be budgeted so you won’t have problems planning for repayment. The debt gets reduced every month and there is no risk of accumulation. That’s the reason why in terms of debt repayment, and the risks associated with debt accumulation, it is always better to finance through personal loans than with credit cards. Besides, the timely payments on your loan get recorded into your credit history as positive input and thus, your credit score improves every month.

By: Jess Peterson
