The “cash for clunkers” program has ended, but another government rebate program has begun, and will offer rebates for the purchase of home appliances, and result in better energy efficiency. The new stimulus program is a government appliance rebate program that comes off the heels of the “cash for clunkers” program and into the home. The U.S. Department of Energy is working with all 50 states to hand out $300 million to persuade consumers to trade in old, energy guzzling appliances for new, energy efficient models.

The government appliance rebate program will give the purchaser of a qualified home appliance rebates, possibly between $50 and $200, for replacing old, inefficient household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and furnaces with newer Energy Star-rated appliances.

Did you know that the average home spends about $2,200 on energy bills every year? Changing to home appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating, can save $75 a year in energy costs, while saving the environment. Until recent news of the government appliance rebate (dubbed “Cash for Appliances” or “Cash for Refrigerators”), many Americans had heard of Energy Star appliances, but didn’t really know much about them other than they cost more than average appliances.

How Will the Government Appliance Rebate Program Work?

Each participating state will be required to put together a unique plan to distribute the government appliance rebate program funds to consumers who purchase energy efficient home appliances. For example the state of New York has initiated their plan, and will be offering rebates under a program coined “The Great Appliance Swap Out”. Although the program initiated October of 09 it is not expected to be in full swing until early 2010.

The states participating will offer rebates to consumers who purchase home appliances in the following categories:

• Boilers
•	Central air conditioners
•	Clothes washers
•	Dishwashers
•	Freezers
•	Furnaces (gas and oil)
•	Heat pumps (air source and geothermal)
•	Refrigerators
•	Room air conditioners
•	Water heaters

The Bottom Line – Save Energy, Save Money!

When buying an appliance, remember that it has two price tags: what you pay to take it home and what you pay for the energy and water it uses. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient ENERGY STAR model, and with the government appliance rebate in place the playing field for home appliance purchases has been leveled.

By: Donald Polletta

There are many people who lust after some hot new appliance that they would really like to see inside their home. But sadly for some strange reason they never really get to buy it.

What are the main reasons that stop people from getting what they want into their homes?

You may not know it but it has a lot to do with the maintenance costs of the home appliances that you already have. They inevitably need to be replaced or repaired just at that time when you would have been ready to get that new hot item into your house. So your money goes into repairing or replacing the item that has broken down and you are forced to postpone your purchase. And this just keeps on happening all the time.

So why not get some service protection plan to take care of what you already have in your home? Did you know that this is a sound way of getting that hot new item you have lusted after for so long? And the news gets even better. Did you know that there are some excellent appliance protection plans in the market these days that help you purchase your next home appliance? In fact some of them will pay you up to $2,500 annually towards that next hot purchase of yours.

This is the reason why appliance protection like many insurance policies is a very sound investment to make. All the reasons for taking out any insurance policy can be applied to the protection of your household goods.

By: Brian Vandeputte

Let us for a minute look at the alternatives to appliance protection in the home and try and estimate what it would cost to do the repairs on our own by selecting the right technical support that we can find for the different items that we have in the house.

Let us start with your heating systems. If it suddenly gave up on you then research shows that it would cost you upwards of $1,000 to replace. This is assuming that you get the right advice and somebody does not fleece you for extra as some heating systems companies are notorious for doing.

What about your hot water system. Chances are that it would cost you no less than $400 to repair.

When it comes to plumbing repair charges the figure varies widely depending on what the problem is. However there are also hidden costs. For instance if the plumber repairs the symptom rather than the cause what will happen is that the problem will recur after a very short time and you will again need to pay for the new repairs. You would of course need to be a plumber yourself or have plenty of experience in this area to make sure that your problem has been fixed in the right way and will not recur again in a hurry.

Moving to the electrical in your house, some of them would put you back several thousand dollars to repair or replace when you add up the costs in the space of one single year.

So would the alternative to home appliance protection be worth your while? You answer that question for yourself.

By: Brian Vandeputte

Accessible technology, restaurant-style quality and high-end design are emerging not merely as trends, but requirements for today’s home enthusiasts. Add to that the desire for design and home appliance choices that reflect environmental sustainability and it’s clear that the kitchens of tomorrow have a lot to live up to.

The Kitchen Rises to the Occasion

In the past, the kitchen served a utilitarian role where people gathered for the basic purpose of cooking and eating. The kitchen will continue to be a central gathering place in the future but on a more social level. For example, it has become the room of choice to entertain guests, featuring all the equipment you need…including the wine cellar. The kitchen will also gain greater control of the rest of the household with touch screen computers allowing consumers to control a variety of aspects of the home including lighting, heating and cooling, entertainment systems, security and more, bringing the focus to the kitchen like never before.

Green – the newest colour trend in kitchens

Along with the kitchen changing to a more social centre, going “green” with appliances and materials is becoming more common. There are two interpretations of ‘green’ – the first is the more universal thought, that “green” means environmentally sustainable materials and/or appliances that are more conservative when it comes to resource use (electricity and water consumption being the main focuses there). The second is the actual health impacts on those interacting with the materials and appliances. For instance, some cabinet interiors use pressed woods. The sealants and binders for these woods can experience “off-gassing,” expelling urea formaldehyde into the immediate environment. This can be a problem for those sensitive to conditions that affect air quality. Instead, particularly sensitive individuals, or those concerned with possible adverse health effects may need to make use of alternatives such as Agra board or wheat board for those interiors. For the environmentally sustainable aspects, bamboo has become a hot material since it quickly reaches maturity. Energy Star®-labeled appliances fit with specific environmental guidelines, offering consumers energy-efficient options, making it easy to save money while protecting the environment for future generations. Many refrigerators and dishwashers bear this environmentally friendly label. Other options for ‘going green’ include choosing an induction cooktop, allowing for more efficient energy use. Although many of the “green” treatments we’re beginning to see in North America have been on the market for some time in Europe, expect to see an even greater increase in the use of materials and appliances under this category as more provinces look to address issues regarding shortages of resources or landfill areas.

Practical Design for the Home Chef

In terms of design, hot trends for kitchens right now include the integration of multiple materials, such as granite or marble countertops with floating glass counters off of them (to provide a place for people to sit and interact with a cook). Wood counters are being introduced to create a warmer feel to the kitchen, while stainless steel is being used from a practical standpoint in regards to food prep and easy cleanup. Another trend can be seen in the expansion of the classic work triangle to provide additional room to welcome the help of a second person when it comes to preparing a meal. Counter-depth refrigerators are reflecting the style and integration of build-in models. Technology is becoming more and more a part of the kitchen: ovens that can accurately measure the internal temperature of meat, poultry and liquid-based casseroles, and can automatically convert conventional times and temperatures to their convection oven equivalents; dishwashers that clean with steam and have sensors to determine if plates are clean; and humidity-controlled crispers that add just the right amount of moisture to fruit and vegetables. A trend that had been big years ago is making a comeback – vent hoods are again being displayed as a focal point. These hoods have beautiful detail and a look that helps compliment the surroundings. New over the-range microwave-hood combination ovens offer seamless design and a space saving option. Professional- grade appliances will become more popular in high-end kitchens to improve functionality and offer the details that matter to those who love to cook. While technology and functional design improvements will increase the capacity and output of the home’s hub, green design elements will help decrease the impact on its occupants’ health and the external environment.

By: Amy Nutt

With the economy in a downswing and money hard to come by, throwing it away on brand new appliances is not a good idea, especially if you cannot afford it. For the people who live in Delaware, when shopping for a home appliance, you would do well to consider checking out the Sears scratch and dent warehouse in Delaware. Read this article to find out how you can buy brand new appliances at reduced prices simply because they have some superficial dents or dings on them.

Sears has made it real big and the name is synonymous with quality and committed customer service and after sales support. As America’s fifth largest broad line retail outlet there are numerous Sears’ stores and warehouses all over the country that provide high end home appliances. When a product is damaged during packing or transportation it is sold as a scratch and dent appliance. This does not mean that it is second hand goods. It is a brand new product that has some surface dents that are sometimes so small as to pass unnoticed. The Sears product line covers a wide spectrum of home appliances, electronics, apparel and automotive products. You can find the store nearest you online. Shopping at the Sears scratch and dent warehouse in Delaware will really net you some good bargains.

You could use the following tips to help you shop successfully. When making your next home appliance purchase, try the Sears scratch and dent warehouse in Delaware.

* Set a budget for your purchase. Find out what the price for a new showroom model will be and then check online for the scratch and dent discounts. You could even take a trip down to the warehouse to check out the models available and their prices.

* Before you go off to buy anything make sure you know what size to buy. Measure the space in your home where the item will go and make a note of all the measurements to take with you to the store.

* Before selecting the model you intend buying think about what you will use it for. By that I don’t mean what you will use a dishwasher for, I mean in terms of load and holding capacity based on the size of your family.

* Prior to buying the appliance check it out completely front, back, sides, insides, over and under. Make sure there are no parts missing and always make sure the sales person is right next to you to verify your findings.

* Find out about the warranty period and what it will cover. If you don’t ask nobody will volunteer the information.

* You need to check on delivery; most scratch and dent places do not provide delivery and you are required to make your own arrangements. You will need to provide for delivery in your budget.

Visit your nearest Sears Scratch and Dent Warehouse in Delaware to check out the range of products available and the corresponding prices so that you are well prepared to budget for that new washer/dryer or vacuum cleaner you are keen on buying.

By: Kermit Cousins

Cooking food with microwave appliances was discovered by Percy Spencer while building magnetrons for radar sets at Raytheon. He was working on an active radar set when he noticed that a peanut chocolate bar he had in his pocket started to melt. The radar had melted his candy bar with microwaves. The first food to be deliberately cooked with Spencer’s innovative appliance was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters.

On October 8, 1945 Raytheon filed a Canada appliance patent for Spencer’s microwave cooking process and an oven that heated food using microwave energy was placed in a restaurant for testing. In 1965 Raytheon acquired Amana Appliances, which introduced the first popular home appliance model, the countertop microwave.

Amana then helped develop a new configuration of the microwave, the short, wide shape that is now common. The magnetron feed was also unique. This resulted in a microwave oven that could survive a no-load condition indefinitely. The new oven was shown at a trade show in Toronto, and helped begin a rapid growth of the market for home microwave ovens. Sales volume for Amana Appliances grew spectacularly, establishing itself as one of the main competitors in Toronto and the modern world.

Several other companies joined in the appliance market and the technology had improved to the point where prices were falling rapidly. Formerly found only in large industrial applications, microwave ovens were increasingly becoming a standard fixture of most kitchens in Toronto. The rapidly falling price of microprocessors also helped by adding electronic controls to make the ovens easier to use, a feature widely researched by Amana. By 1986, roughly 25% of households in Toronto. owned a microwave appliance, up from only about 1% in 1971. Current estimates hold that over 90% of Toronto households have a microwave.

Microwaves come in different styles now, such as counter top, over the range and the fanciest, built-in.

By: Paul Rollins

The invention of the refrigerator has allowed the modern family to purchase, store, freeze, prepare and preserve food products in a fresh state for much longer periods of time than was previously possible. The aesthetics and features of kitchen appliances have been constantly improving, like frost-free refrigerators and freezers.

LG has created an innovative frost-free refrigeration appliance that uses a blower fan to keep moisture out of the unit. It also has a heating coil beneath the evaporator that periodically heats the freezer compartment and melts any ice build-up. Some units also have heaters in the side of the door to keep the unit from “weeping.” Manual defrost refrigerators are available in used appliance stores or by special order.

Refrigerators used to consume more energy than any other home appliance, but in the last twenty years great strides have been made to make refrigerators more energy efficient, researched by manufacturers such as LG. In the early 90s, a competition was held in Toronto among the major manufacturers to encourage energy efficiency. It was a huge success with manufactures like LG Appliance creating greener refrigerators. Current models that are Energy Star qualified use 50 percent less energy than models made before 1993. The most energy-efficient unit made in the US and Toronto is designed to run on 12 or 110 volts, and consumes about half a kilowatt-hour per day. Larger appliances, especially those with large freezers and icemakers, may use as much as 4 kWh per day.

Among the different styles of refrigeration appliances, top mount freezer models are the most efficient since the cold air can be distributed through the refrigerator easier due to cold air being heavier than warmer air inside the fridge. Bottom mount freezer models of the same capacity and less efficient since the heavy cold air has to travel upward. Side by side refrigerators are the lest efficient models, but LG is still improving on the design to make them as efficient as possible. Many LG refrigeration appliances offer ice makers that are through-the-door, which are less efficient than those without, but offer a very convenient way of getting ice, models that are very popular with Toronto residents.

It is highly recommended to purchase Energy Star appliances offered by LG and other manufacturers, even though they are slightly more expensive than normal ones. The energy that is saved makes up for the extra charge and in Toronto and the rest of Ontario Energy Star appliances are PST exempt.

By: Paul Rollins

What do you need in your kitchen the most? What home appliance do you use the most? Do you use kitchen appliances or do you like to get down and dirty? Well if you like that good for you, but people tend change with times. And we are living in a modern day of age, and home appliances have never been this affordable and advanced. It almost sounds like I’m talking about spy phones and not kitchen appliances. But just a few of us use spy phones so the rest of us are going to have to settle with kitchen appliances.

Now the basic types of home appliances every home has are refrigerators, ovens and air conditioners. Well the last one is a choice but it gets hot out there. But the first two no home can live without. Do you know a person that doesn’t have one of those? I’m just going to skip those two because you already know everything there is to know about them. But there are other kitchen appliances that we all use on a regular basis like toaster or blender, microwave ovens. And don’t tell me you don’t use microwave ovens, we nuked the whole country with them, so now you’re going to use them whether you like it or not. Sorry, I got a little Gestapo kind of attitude. But just imagine your everyday life without home appliances such as those. And yeah, I know that you can live without them. You managed without them 20 years ago you can now. We also managed without fire and pluming but do you avoid those? These are the things we all got used to and it’s hard to go back on some habits. I know I can go into the kitchen and turn around and when I see all those kitchen appliances I know I’m going to eat something in 5 minutes. And if I was in the old days I would have to wait half an hour. And I agree, it’s not the same when you cook something and when you just heat it up or something like that. But guess what, what do you use to cook? You use a kitchen appliance. I rest my case.

Now the only thing left for us is to find those home appliances at the right price. Because if we want to equip our kitchen that will cost an arm and a leg. But when equipping a kitchen we probably won’t rush in the store and buy all the kitchen appliances we need. We’re going to buy a few most necessary and get the rest one at a time. But it will still cost a lot. So I have a suggestion for you to find the right price for the home appliance you are looking for. Just browse on the internet. Online stores can offer you much more than kitchen appliances, but you just need to look for them. Especially pay attention to price compare sites as they give you an opportunity to compare a wider market of kitchen appliances or whatever it is that you’re looking for.

By: Zarko Z Zivkovic

If you’re planning to pick up some home appliances over the internet, you can check few of the online classified websites like Criagslist and compare prices of different sellers and appliances available for sale before making any decisions.

Never buy dirty items. Home appliances that have not been kept in a good or neat condition need not be bought. Look elsewhere and buy a product that has been cleaned by the seller before taking a picture.

Ask the reason for the sale. Always ask a seller their reason for putting up their home appliance for sale. If it is because they have bought a new one or they do not require the appliance anymore or they need money urgently, then you can consider buying it. However, check if the appliance works.

No picture, no purchase. If a Craigslist ad doesn’t have a picture, move on to the next one. There is no use in making a deal when you can’t see the product first.

Cheap Purchase Season. The months between May and August usually see a lot of cheap home appliances ads by college students who are returning home after completion of their course and newlyweds rearranging their stuff. Buy during this season.

Seek friends’ help. While transporting huge, yet delicate appliances, get a friend’s help. Do not pressurize the seller by asking his help as you might not get it.

Similarly, if you need to use the seller’s truck to transport the appliance, ask for their help nicely and pay some extra bucks.

By: Jyotsna T Ramani
