Who is it that washes the dishes around your house? We have all had to do this task at some time and it is not really a lot of fun is it? Hotpoint – Story of the UK’s Best Selling Kitchen Appliances

The Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was formed in 1911 and now Hotpoint is a household name for kitchen appliances such as dishwashers, fridge freezers and washing machines.

In 1920 Hotpoint and GElectric of the United States established the Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited to market branded goods in the UK. In 1929, Hotpoint became a part of GEC group. Hotpoint was a brand of GEC and in 1989 merged into a new division named General Domestic Appliances. GE then purchased a 50% share, and in 1998 was to become GDA Applied Energy.

Hotpoint is now part owned by Merloni, founded by Aristide Merloni as Industrie Merloni in 1930. The company didn’t originally produce appliances but soon created a range of appliances branded Ariston.

In 1985, Merloni bought Indesit, they were competitors in Italy at the time, but Merloni did not have the european presence that Indesit had gained. Back in 2005 Merloni was renamed Indesit Company, as Indesit was the most recognizable brand under their control.

Indesit Company had a 14% slice of the white goods market in 2007. This comprises of appliances like washers, dryers, refrigeration, dishwashers and built in products too. Ovens, hobs and cooker hoods are a large part of this market now, especially with the European trend of built-in kitchens becoming ever more popular.

Sales tipped €3.4 billion last year, and the group produced over 16 million kitchen appliances in over 30 markets around the world. The group is second only to Electrolux for production of appliances in Europe. They currently employ over seventeen thousand people.

The one thing that seems to keep Hotpoint at the top of the sales table is the ability they have to look after customers post-purchase. Many a brand has fallen down due to inadequate response times, poor timescales for service and repair, and high product failure rates. Playing to the economies of scale they benefit from, Hotpoint have over the years installed a dependable back-up network. More homes have a Hotpoint appliance than any other brand, and they back this up with the biggest after-sales service operation in Europe. We Had to Wash All Our Dishes by Hand When Our Dishwasher Stopped Working!

Our dishwasher stopped working a couple of weeks ago so I started looking for a new one. I had no idea that there were so many variations available. We managed doing it all by hand for a week or so but that just had to stop.

However did we manage before the dishwasher was invented. There was a lot of dishes to be washed by hand I know that. It was not as bad when just two people had a meal together but I do not think that I could have faced cleaning all the crockery and cutlery that is made dirty when we have a dinner party for eight.

When I looked it up on the internet I found out that the dishwasher was invented sometime between the mid nineteenth century and the 1920s. I say that because the first patent for a dish washing device was in 1850 but the dishwasher as we know it today was not possible until permanent plumbing was available in houses.

So, how did I go about finding my replacement. There were two main things that I had to decide.

The first thing I had to do was measure the hole that I took it out of and the new one would have to fit in to. In fact most dishwashers are built with a standard width of 24 inches and will happily fit into a 34 inch hole. By checking that I discovered that I did indeed need to get a 24 in built in dishwasher.

The second was to work out what material the new washer should be made of. One thing that surprised me was that a tub that is made of plastic is better than one made of stainless steel. The reasons seem to be that they are better in areas with hard water, they keep the heat better to help the drying cycle and they make the machine quieter to use. The downside, of course, is that they are a bit more expensive.

Those two things were all I needed to know to get the basic dishwasher that I wanted but, if I had wanted to spend some more money I could have bought one with an attachment which basically works as a waste disposal unit to clear away the bigger bits of leftovers.

So I went out and bought one which was delivered and fitted the next day. All we have to do now is make sure that we use the right amounts of dishwasher salt and rinse aid and we cannot go wrong.

Unfortunately there are some things that we cannot put in the dishwasher. Cast iron utensils might rust, anything that has been affected by cigarette ash or candle wax will contaminate the rest of the wash. It is not recommended to put cutlery with wooden handles or things like wood chopping boards in.

If you have any doubts it is best to wash it by hand. We managed everything for a few days so it is not the end of the world.

In fact you may use more water washing your dishes by hand then what you would use in a dishwasher during a single cycle.

Refrigerators are becoming an appliance of convenience due to the fact that it is no longer necessary to open the door in order to get ice and cold water. Now it can be accessed from outside the refrigerator on the door. This not only provides you with a constant supply of ice and cold water for drinking but it also saves energy because you do not open the refrigerator door to access them. This can save you a lot of money on your power bill each year since this is the reason why the refrigerator is opened so often.

Washers and Dryers are now being made to be energy efficient as they save on the amount of water they use as well as the many different cycles and selections to make that will wash your clothes and dry them on the first try. If clothes do not get clean on the first cycle we usually put them back to wash again. This can cause you to use more energy, more water and heat. Dryers can not dry efficiently on the first cycle if the load is large or the wrong settings are used. This may cause you to use your dryer more than once in order to dry your load of clothes.

Modern appliances are not only easier to use with all their different settings but they are more efficient as well. Choosing to upgrade your appliances may be a big expense initially but after a while the savings will more than pay for the appliance. Most appliance stores can offer you all the latest in home appliances.

1. Use your dishwasher.

It may sound strange, but a dishwasher actually uses less water than an average session of hand washing dishes. Thanks to modern technology, dishwashers are a lot more efficient these days and use about 5-7 less gallons of water than washing by hand. Meanwhile, replacing an older model can save you about $50 a year on your water and energy bills.

2. Never run an empty dishwasher.

Because a dishwashing cycle is going to use the same amount of water and energy whether it’s full or you have a single spoon in there, you ought to fill it up. Waiting until it’s full before you run it will reduce your energy bill along with the number of times you have to run your washer. It will also save you the additional physical labor of putting dishes away more frequently.

Instead, get in the habit of using your timer and oven light to look in on your chef’s masterpiece.

6. Shine your burner elements.

If you have electric burners on your stove with reflector bowls underneath them, you can save energy by keeping them clean and shiny. Dirty bowls will absorb heat, but shiny and clean ones will reflect it back to the burner and your pot, meaning less energy being used.
