How to Paint Your Kitchen Appliances
You would really like to redo the kitchen but prices for all new appliances, counter tops and cabinets are pretty high. Painting walls and cabinets is easy to do, but you might be concerned that your old appliances will then look “old and shabby” in the newly repainted kitchen.
There is a way to do a complete make over, including reviving the appliances for a fraction of the cost. Even old appliances can take a whole new appearance when you use appliance paint.
Appliance paint is available in spray form and brush applied form. Spray is easier to use, specially for large appliances, but applying paint with a brush gives better results. Spray paint will not have the variety of colors that brush on will, and the heat tolerance of brush on paint will be higher than spray paint.
It is important to choose a very good quality. Replacing appliances is very costly, while painting them changes their look at a fraction of the cost, so skimping on the cost of paint could be a big mistake. It could damage your appliance. Of course pricing is no way to decide on a paint and you must ask vendors or read labels to ensure that the quality you are buying is to the standards that you want. Good paint can also be on sale sometimes.
Once you have decided on the paint quality, you will also need to buy a few tools. You will need masking tape, brushes and brush cleaner if you use brush on type paint, steel wool and a good primer.
As in any painting job preparation is as important as the painting itself. You will need to clean the appliance thoroughly and remove all grease, then smooth the surface with steel wool before applying the paint. Make sure to let the primer dry very well before proceeding. When the primer is dried a light rub with fine steel wool is needed before applying the appliance paint. Masking tape will be used to protect areas that will not be painted, ensure that the paint is completely dried before attempting to remove the masking tape.
