Water is essential for life and the human body is large made up of water. Water replaces lost body fluids and promotes cell metabolism and other vital functions. In fact every adult should consume around 8-10 glasses of water every day. This need would vary depending on size, weight, and health conditions. Children need more water and fluids than adults.

Clean water prevents ailments and diseases. In industrial environments clean water prevents contamination of process. World wide water filtration systems are in use to ensure that clean water is available for human consumption. Filtered water is used not just for cooking and drinking but for bathing purposes as well.

Drinking water comes from various different sources: wells, rivers, lakes, ponds, springs, rain, snow and so forth. Natural water can be hard or soft and contain many pollutants from the environment.Very often the water gets contaminated by bacteria, viruses, organic and inorganic substances. Contaminants in water include: taste and odor causing contaminants, rust and sediments, bacteria, parasites, lead, and other chemical poisons. And these could cause diseases. To ensure that water is clean for domestic or industrial use water filters are used.

1.	Water filters remove dust particles from water.

2.	Filtration also ensures that contaminants like fungi, cryptosporidium and protozoa gardia are removed from the water.

3.	Filters are designed such that they remove harmful substances like lead from drinking water.

4.	Bacterial and viral contaminations are also removed. Often water contamination is the source of wide spread gastrointestinal diseases.

5.	The filtration process effectively removes excess chlorine, its byproducts, and volatile organic compounds from water.

6.	Filtration however does not remove trace minerals contained in water that are essential for health. Most water filtration systems encourage adsorption.

Among all water purification systems filtration is the least expensive and does not require huge amounts of electricity. Filtration is efficient and does not waste water. There are many kinds of filters: whole house filters; under sink filters; faucet mounted filters; countertop or canister filters and so on.

The World Wide Web has immense information on water and filtration systems. You can read articles and tips on water filtration and view the various options available online at websites that are solely devoted to water filters for domestic and industrial use. Always comparison shop and compare product efficacies as well as price. The internet brings you the convenience of being able to buy a water filter for your home, office, or factory from your computer.

By: Arthur Raise

Your Singer sewing machine is made to last with minimal upkeep and repairs. However, just like any machine, it needs regular preventative maintenance to ensure smooth running.
Unplug Your Machine — Always unplug your sewing machine from any electricity before performing any upkeep. Clean Your Machine — You can wipe down the surface with a damp, soft cloth, using a mild soap if you like. Use a lint brush to remove lint — Especially tackle the lint remaining on the take-up lever and thread guides, presser, needle bars, and bobbin case. Lubricate your machine — Your machine usually comes with a small bottle of special oil just right for your Singer sewing machine. If you run out, you can purchase more at either a Singer distributor, or online. Check your manual for a diagram of where you need to lubricate your machine and how often. Singer machines are generally designed to need oiling only once a year when the machine is used several times weekly. More frequent use may require more frequent lubricating. Keep a spare light bulb around — Find the right light bulb part number on the Singerco.com site and keep one around in case yours burns out. Check your manual for any special instructions — Especially if you are having any trouble, your manual may have a good troubleshooting section. Have your machine checked by professionals — Singer authorized dealers will have a shop that is designated for routine maintenance. Routine checkups will keep your Singer sewing machine in the family for generations.
A little upkeep goes a long way with these reliable machines. If you have a really old Singer, you may need the motor checked, or the belt replaced. It’s worth the small amount of time and energy to ensure that you can keep on sewing all your favorite projects.

By: Robin A. Brown

When choosing the correct air conditioning for your home, consider various options before making a final decision. There are permanent models, as well as portable air conditioning units that you may use to cool your home. The small window models are easier to install than a large unit, which may require the help of a professional.

If you find yourself without a central air conditioning unit, you could be miserable during the summer months. You can save yourself the misery by installing a small, and very manageable, single room air conditioning unit. Many homeowners choose to install such a unit in their bedroom, but that’s completely up to you. You can choose between an air conditioning unit that is removable for your window, or you may opt for a permanent installation in your wall. A portable window unit is the easiest to install and you will be glad to know that you won’t have to make any holes in your wall because most units just use a regular electrical outlet.

Before purchasing your window air conditioning unit, measure your window to ensure that you get one that fits perfectly. If possible, choose a window that is already near an outlet as this will save you from having to use extension cords.

Installation Of A Window Air Conditioning Unit

When you’ve purchased the perfect air conditioning unit, remove it from the box and follow the installation instructions. Your new air conditioning unit should include mounting hardware, which will need to be attached to your window. It’s important to read, and follow the instructions carefully. If mounting hardware is installed incorrectly, the air conditioning unit may fall from the window and cause damage to whatever lies in it’s path, not to mention the certain damage of the unit itself.

Now, you are ready to place the air conditioning unit into place. Open the window high enough to allow you room to place the unit and also some extra room for your arms to move without hitting the window.

It may be a good idea to have someone help you during this step, in order to hold the window open and to allow you the convenience of an extra pair of hands should the unit be difficult to balance during installation. Your new air conditioning unit should have handles for easy manageability, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Make sure that the air conditioning unit sits properly into the mounting hardware and then close the window onto the air conditioner. Pull out the extensions, which should be located on the side of the unit, in order to close the openings between the unit and each side of the window. Once everything is in place, secure each extension to the sash according to the instructions.

Before wrapping up, look for a foam strip that should be included with your air conditioning unit. This product is used to fill the air gap in the window. As you finalize the installation, make sure that the air conditioning unit is secured in position using it’s mounting brackets and plug in the unit once you have completed every step as outlined in the owner’s manual.

It’s important to realize that each unit may be different and, therefore, each may have small variations in installation. By reading your owner’s and installation manual carefully, you will ensure a quick and easy installation. A window air conditioning unit should take 1-2 hours to install and is a recommended do-it-yourself project.

Repair Of An Installation Air Conditioning Unit

If your new air conditioning system is not functioning properly, unplug it immediately. Begin by reading through the troubleshooting section of your owner’s manual. If your system is under warranty, call the manufacturer, whose name and contact number should be listed in the manual. If the system is no longer covered under any kind of warranty, you may wish to call an air conditioning professional or simply replace the unit altogether. It is often more expensive to pay for repairs of an item than it would be to purchase a completely new air conditioning unit.

By: Steven Briesemeister

Fill the kitchen with some appliances not just with the groceries.

We always feel the need of having as many kitchen appliances in our homes. Every time we watch a new appliance on the TV we think of buying it. Mostly it is the women’s concern but some of the men who love cooking are equally interested in the newer appliances. In this fast and busy world where both the men and the women work, the need of appliances is increasing.

These appliances are gadgets that reduce the time spent on cooking. Almost everything from peeling to cutting vegetables is done by them. These perform jobs like grinding, mixing, cutting, baking, frying, and much more. You don’t even need to wash the dishes yourself because the dish washer does it for you. You can enjoy having fruit juices, shakes, sauces, pastes, etc at home. The newer ones ensure cooking within minutes. Ovens, food processors, microwaves are the trend of today when it comes to cooking. These have made cooking easier for singles, bachelors and students.

After a hectic busy day the only thing that one sees is the mess in the kitchen and a thousand worries on how to clean it. But thanks to these handy appliances even the bachelors can keep the kitchen little bit cleaner than before. For food lovers it is a common thing to search for newer appliances anywhere they could find. There are several TV shops that focus on promoting various kinds of kitchen accessories.

By: Jitesh Arora

During World War II the use of radars became wide spread after Britain sold the technology to America in 1941. A device for jamming radars called the magnetron was used more and more and ultimately lead to the allies control of the skies over Europe. The control over the skies though was paramount in the final allied victory, but also meant that the allied air forces could blanket bomb German cities.

The technology lives on in a far more practical domestic use! “The microwave oven”. So how can there be salvation from this ? The main power unit for microwave ovens is the magnetron and is one of the most efficient and energy saving ways to cook food.Magnetrons produce short wave microwaves, which creates the power behind microwave ovens. Panasonic have come up with inverter technology that replaces some of the power units with a circuit board and reduces weight whilst increasing capacity of there next generation of microwaves.

This low use of energy not only saves money, but also contributes to saving the planet. Global warming is a reality and in the next twenty years could be catastrophic. By using less power while cooking we can all contribute to slowing the effects of global warming and leave the future secure for generations to come. Getting more from your microwave is sometimes difficult as some foods do not brown, but there are some great combination microwaves with browning devices and a large array of foods produced specifically for microwaves. So from War there really can be salvation.

By: Ross Wharton

The wood cook stove can become a very cost effective appliance in your home. If you happen to live where wood is readily available, you may want to consider investing in an operable wood cook stove. No, you do not have to use it all the time for cooking, but while it stops the furnace from running 24/7; it can also be stewing a pot of chili. Imagine the amount of gas or electricity that you will save each day.

Many of the vintage or antique stoves are very operable today. As an example of this, I personally purchased a 1940’s stove and had it brought up to working condition. It required a new set of bricks in the firebox and a new chimney pipe. Total cost of the repairs amounted to approximately $32.00. The fuel or wood was sixty dollars a pickup load, cut and split.

Having a centrally located kitchen in an open concept home allowed the heat to travel to all corners of the home. Heat goes up, so the upper level was always warm too. The closed stairwell did not seem to stop the heat from traveling to the second level, but the temperature was slightly lower then on the first level.

The stove burned during the day light hours and never was without a pot of homemade soup, pot of coffee, teakettle of water, chili or a casserole, or chicken in the oven. Home made bread or biscuits, beans, or a pot roast cooked without ever starting the electric stove. A pan of eggs and bacon, or flapjacks could easily be on the breakfast menu.

With vintage being a very popular aspect of home decorating, a wood cook stove could easily fit into many homes and become a cost effective appliance you may learn you love.

By: Rebecca Froebel

Can you really save 40% on your electricity bills by plugging a small box into your AC socket?

In the past six month a number of products have been advertised on TV and online which seem too good to be true. I’d like to explain the reality of these exciting claims and give you a layman’s understanding of how Power Savers work.

A Power Saver is a device which you plug in to your power socket. Apparently just by keeping the device connected it will immediately reduce your power consumption. Typical claims are savings between 25% and 40%.

The technology behind Power Saver units comes from German research coupled with Asian manufacturing and it is based on sound scientific principles.

Electricity is not stable. When electricity flows the voltage can rise and fall all the time. The rises in voltage are known as ‘spikes’ and they cannot be used by your appliances at all. All these spikes do is waste your electricity. These power spikes also convert electrical energy into heat energy which leaks power from your circuit. Not only that but the heat will also do long-term danage to your wiring and to your appliances.

There are a few Power Saver models on the market but they all work along the same principle. They store the electricity inside of it using a system of capacitors and they release it in a smoother way to normal without the spikes. The systems also automatically remove carbon from the circuit which also encourages a smoother electrical flow. This means that you will have less power spikes. More of the electricity flowing around your circuit can be used to power your appliances than before.

There are many factors which do affect the efficiency of your Power Saver. The device works immediately after plugging it in although it can take as long as 8 days before it has adjusted itself for peak performance. The rate of savings will depend on what kind of appliances you have connected. All appliances are different but expect savings of up to 25% on lights, 30% on air-conditioning units and up to 35% on other appliances.

The highest savings will be in areas where voltage supply is less stable. Locations close to shops, restaurants and light industries tend to gain additional savings from Power Saver devices.

So how can you be sure that your Power Saver is working correctly?

Most often Power Savers come fitted with a light to indicate that it is working. If you have access to an electricity meter then you should see it immediately slowing down. Assuming that the light is on and that you leave the device unattended you can expect savings immediately. Be aware that often electricity companies will not take meter readings each month. Often bills are calculated on monthly averages which self-correct over time so please be aware of that in using your bill as a guide.

Finally, it is highly recommended to order your Power Savers from companies offering 100% guarantees for longer than 30 days. Remember that 30 days may not be sufficient time to truly know if the device is working as effectively as you expect. Try to work with companies that extend their guarantee dates to at least 60 day which gives you a much longer period to assess the benefits.

By: Martin Pavion

Small refrigerators, often referred to as mini refrigerators or compact refrigerators, are great at offering conveniences for many people in many different living scenarios. For most people a mini refrigerator serves the purpose of a backup or supplemental appliance to their primary, full-sized refrigerator. But for a small college dorm room where refrigerating needs are limited a mini refrigerator is popular because it does the job on a small, compact scale.

Small beverage refrigerators are commonly used in homes that are large enough to enjoy the convenience of having a small refrigerator in or around an area or room that is frequently used for gathering of people, such as an outdoor refrigerator in the backyard or a beverage refrigerator in the bar or game room.

In college the needs are limited to snacks, leftover pizza, and drinks. A mini refrigerator serves these needs and not much more. For a busy college student who is occupied with either studying or partying, maintaining a full sized refrigerator is not only impractical but impossible with the limited amount of living space available. It is perfect for storing enough food for a meal and a half.

But being a college student means more than limited refrigerating needs and limited living space. Most typical college students have very temporary living situations that requires a lot of moving. That means most students do not own much furniture or large appliances. A small refrigerator is easy to move around and can be transported without excessive assistance. It can be laid on its side to fit in a standard commercial vehicle but remember to let the refrigerator sit up right for a couple hours before plugging in the power.

By: Will Edison

All across America, small independent appliance stores have been dropping like flies over the past few decades. Why? Because of the huge influx of these huge Big Box chain stores that have inundated every big city and small town in the country. You know which stores I mean — Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Circuit City, Best Buy, Sam’s Club, Target, Costco, etc. These stores really do stack ‘em deep and sell ‘em cheap. But at quite a cost. We’re losing our small appliance stores.

And that’s a shame. Mom and Pop businesses have always been the backbone of America, and losing them hurts us in ways most people never think about.. Unlike the huge chains, which only stock the most popular products in order to maximize profits, independent appliance stores stock a wide variety of makes and models of major and minor appliances, giving us many more choices for our family’s needs.

In addition, the owners, managers and staff at these small stores know their stuff. They have to know it – selling and servicing appliances is all they do. And because it’s all they do, they can answer just about all questions a customer might have about any of their products. Contrast this with the big chain stores, where you’re very unlikely to get any of your questions answered, assuming you can even find someone to ask.

Yes, prices are generally higher at appliance stores than they are at the big chains. There’s no way they can compete with the buying power of multi-billion dollar corporations. But there’s more to life than saving a few bucks, like personal attention and high levels of customer service. Times are tough in America, but if at all possible, you should support your local appliance store. If you don’t, they’ll be gone. And we’ll all be sorry.

By: Gregory McDivitt

The known brands for washing machines in India include Electrolux, Kelvinator, Godrej, IFB, LG, Onida, Samsung, Sanyo, Videocon, Whirlpool.

Types Of Washing Machine

Semi Automatic:

A Semi Automatic machine is the one that has twin tubs and performs the three functions of washing, rinsing and spin-drying. One tub does the washing and rinsing and the other performs spin-drying. Once these functions are completed in the wash tub, the clothes have to be manually transferred to the spin tub for drying. This model is a best option for those who do not have a constant supply of water. All leading brands offer good models with all the ultra-modern features.

Fully Automatic:

In a Fully Automatic machine all the three tasks of washing, rinsing and drying are performed in a single tub. This machine offers the ease of selecting a program to perform any one or specific combinations or all of the operations.

Fully Automatic machine can be further classified into three categories based on their ‘level of control.’

Neuro Fuzzy Control:

This gives the ultimate level of control that one could desire. It has the ‘ sensors’ which automatically detect the type of fabric and accordingly determine the wash time, water and detergent required.

Fuzzy Control:

Fuzzy control has “load sensors’. They indicate the amount of detergent and water required and determine the wash cycle based on the wash load.
This control allows one to save water, detergent and most importantly electricity, while the machine automatically estimates optimum wash time.

Conventional or Manual:

The person himself is incharge here. You have to decide what you want the machine to do for you. The wash cycle, the water level as well as the detergent amount needs to be selected and set by you.

Based on the loading options:

Top loading: Here the clothes are loaded from the top.

Front loading: Here the clothes are loaded from the front.

Comparisons of energy use show that front loading Washing Machine generally use less energy, water and detergent and are more efficient as well as sometimes more effective at cleaning. The new top loaders are poor at performance especially since the government regulations have reduced the amount of energy they consume, which has resulted in shortened cycles and less effective cleaning. Front loaders do tend to have longer cycle times although they still consume less energy. Front-loaders consume less energy, with dramatically lower amounts of water and less detergent.

By: Monty Alexander
